About the herbs..
Milky Oats: The lovely green tops of the oat plant are nourishing and so very good for depression that is compounded by exhaustion and fatigue. They are a remedy in cases of nerve irritability. They help repair damaged nerves, reduce pain, replenish nutrient stores and correct nervous system function. They help reset energy levels due to emotional and physical burnout. Milky oats also show great improvement to working memory, help clear thinking, lift moods and soothe the adrenals.
Hawthorn Berries: I used these again as they are a rockstar for matters of the heart. Hawthorn is beneficial for circulation and soothing to the nerves.
Lemon Balm: Such a darling herb. Lemon balm treats the mind, nervous system and GI tract which some believe suggests it has an effect on serotonin levels. It is widely used for mood disorders as well as ADHD. It is known to relieve stress.
Saint John's Wort: Probably the best known herb for depression (and anxiety as well) is Saint John's Wort. It has the ability to lift spirits and is used to treat stress, seasonal affective disorder, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and postpartum depression. Within the leaves and flowers are potent constituents such as hypericin and hyperforin, which have antidepressant effects. I will do an herb spotlight in more detail.. It is pain relieving and anti-inflammatory as well. Its regarded as safe for breastfeeding by many herbalists. Many express concern if this herb can be taken in conjunction with prescription antidepressants. In my reading, it can serve as an effective transitional herb for those on medications provided they are not suicidal or have chronic clinical depression. Saint John's wort is a nerve tonic that builds and strengthens the nervous system whereas antidepressants block nerve responses. As always, consult with your doctor first.
