Two herbal extractions. One refreshing botanical massage gel for comfort when your body needs it.

A smooth, refreshing massage gel featuring dual extracts of Arnica and St. John's wort, thoughtfully formulated for targeted botanical massage.

Botanical Massage Gel: Muscle Ease brings together two treasured herbs in traditional Western herbalism, arnica and St. John's wort, in a beautifully smooth, lightweight gel designed for targeted massage.

What makes Muscle Ease special is its dual-extraction approach. I use both hydroalcoholic extracts and herbal-infused sunflower oil to capture different groups of naturally occurring constituents from arnica flowers (Arnica montana) and St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). Because plant constituents vary in their solubility, combining these traditional preparations allows me to incorporate a broader range of botanical compounds than either extraction method alone.

Rather than relying on a heavy oil or salve base, I've incorporated these extracts into a smooth, refreshing gel formulated with Sepimax ZEN. The addition of herbal-infused sunflower oil and dimethicone provides lovely slip and a silky skin feel, making it a pleasure to massage into the skin without leaving a heavy, greasy residue.

Lavender and peppermint hydrosols contribute a naturally refreshing botanical aroma, while aloe vera, allantoin, flax-derived glycerin, and propanediol help keep the skin feeling soft, hydrated, and comfortable.

Whether you're winding down after a physically demanding day, enjoying a little post-activity self-care, or simply taking a moment for a relaxing massage, Muscle Ease offers a convenient way to incorporate traditional herbal preparations into your routine.

Packaged in a convenient 2 oz squeeze tube for easy, targeted application.

Why This Matters

Different extraction methods capture different plant constituents.

Arnica and St. John's wort contain a complex assortment of naturally occurring compounds, and no single extraction method captures them all equally.

Hydroalcoholic extraction draws out a variety of water- and alcohol-soluble constituents, including certain flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and other botanical components.

Oil infusion favors more oil-soluble constituents and has a longstanding place in traditional herbal preparations.

By incorporating both types of extracts, I've created a more comprehensive botanical preparation that honors traditional herbal methods while taking advantage of modern formulation techniques.

The delivery system matters, too.

Traditional herbal oils and salves certainly have their place, but I wanted something with a different application experience.

Muscle Ease offers the smooth glide of a massage product in a lightweight, refreshing gel. The addition of skin-conditioning ingredients makes it pleasant to use, while the squeeze tube allows for convenient, mess-free application.

The result is a thoughtfully formulated botanical gel that combines traditional herbal knowledge, complementary extraction methods, and a beautifully smooth skin feel.

Arnica Flowers (Arnica montana)
Arnica is one of the most recognizable herbs in traditional topical herbalism, and for good reason. This beautiful, yellow-flowered plant belongs to the Asteraceae family and has a long history of use in European herbal preparations, particularly those traditionally applied after physical exertion, everyday bumps, and minor knocks. Arnica flowers contain a fascinating assortment of naturally occurring constituents, including sesquiterpene lactones such as helenalin and dihydrohelenalin derivatives, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. These constituents have been extensively investigated for their biological activity and help explain why arnica continues to attract interest in modern botanical research.

I wanted Muscle Ease to reflect more than one aspect of this remarkable plant. By incorporating both a hydroalcoholic extract and an herbal-infused oil, I can include different groups of arnica's naturally occurring constituents, since their solubility varies depending on the extraction medium. The tincture provides access to constituents extracted by alcohol and water, while the oil infusion contributes a complementary preparation with its own chemical profile. I chose arnica as one of the foundational herbs in Muscle Ease because of its longstanding place in traditional herbal massage and my appreciation for the complexity of the plant itself.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
St. John's wort is another treasured herb in traditional Western herbalism, with a history of both internal and external preparations extending back centuries. While many people recognize it for its traditional association with emotional well-being, St. John's wort also has a rich history of topical use, particularly in herbal oils and massage preparations. Its flowering aerial parts contain several interesting groups of constituents, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, naphthodianthrones such as hypericin, and phloroglucinol derivatives such as hyperforin.

One of the most fascinating aspects of St. John's wort is how its constituent profile changes depending on the method of extraction. Hydroalcoholic preparations can extract a variety of flavonoids and other alcohol- and water-soluble compounds, while oil infusions favor certain lipophilic constituents. Traditional St. John's wort oil is particularly recognizable for the reddish color that can develop during preparation, although color alone doesn't establish the concentration of any particular constituent.

I chose to incorporate both preparations into Muscle Ease because I wanted to honor the traditional herbal use of this plant while making thoughtful use of different extraction methods. Paired with arnica, St. John's wort forms the botanical foundation of this massage gel.

Herbal-Infused Sunflower Seed Oil (Helianthus annuus)
Sunflower seed oil is the carrier I use to prepare the herbal oil infusion of arnica and St. John's wort. It is a wonderfully versatile botanical oil, valued for its light texture, emollient properties, and compatibility with a wide range of skincare formulations. Sunflower oil naturally contains fatty acids, including linoleic and oleic acids, although their proportions vary depending on the variety of sunflower used.

In addition to serving as an extraction medium for the herbs, sunflower oil contributes its own skin-conditioning qualities to the finished formula. It helps soften the skin and provides a little additional slip during massage without making the gel feel excessively oily. At just 1% of the formula, the herbal-infused oil complements the water-based gel rather than dominating its texture.

I particularly appreciate being able to incorporate a traditional herbal oil into a modern gel formulation. It allows me to retain the character of an infused botanical oil while offering a different, lighter application experience.

Aloe Vera (Aloe vera)
Aloe vera has been used in traditional skincare for centuries and is particularly appreciated for its refreshing, moisturizing, and skin-conditioning qualities. The inner leaf gel contains naturally occurring polysaccharides, including acemannan, which contribute to aloe's characteristic texture and botanical properties. Aloe is frequently incorporated into water-based skincare products because it complements humectants and other ingredients intended to maintain soft, comfortable skin.

I use a concentrated 200× aloe vera powder rather than conventional bottled aloe juice. This allows me to incorporate aloe into the formula without adding a large volume of prepared aloe liquid. In Muscle Ease, aloe contributes to the moisturizing character of the gel and complements the botanical hydrosols, glycerin, and propanediol.

I chose it because I wanted the finished product to be as pleasant for the skin as it is convenient to apply.

Allantoin
Allantoin is a well-established cosmetic ingredient valued for its skin-conditioning and protective properties. It occurs naturally in certain plants, including comfrey, although cosmetic-grade allantoin is commonly manufactured rather than extracted directly from botanical material. Allantoin is particularly appreciated in skincare formulations intended to help maintain a soft, smooth, comfortable skin feel.

It is often incorporated into products for dry or rough-feeling skin because of its ability to improve the appearance and feel of the skin's surface. I include allantoin at 0.5% to complement the moisturizing ingredients in Muscle Ease and contribute to the overall skin-conditioning experience.

While the herbal extracts are the botanical focus of this formula, I believe the supporting ingredients are equally important in creating a product that feels lovely to use.

Lavender Hydrosol (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender hydrosol is the aromatic water produced during the steam distillation of lavender. Unlike concentrated lavender essential oil, a hydrosol consists primarily of water with small amounts of naturally occurring aromatic constituents. It offers a softer, more delicate expression of the plant's familiar floral aroma.

Lavender has a long history of use in traditional herbal preparations, including aromatic waters, baths, and topical skincare. In Muscle Ease, lavender hydrosol contributes a gentle botanical fragrance and a refreshing water-based component to the gel. It pairs beautifully with peppermint hydrosol, creating an aromatic experience that is both fresh and pleasantly herbal.

I chose lavender because it complements the traditional character of arnica and St. John's wort while making the finished gel especially enjoyable during massage.

Peppermint Hydrosol (Mentha × piperita)
Peppermint is a wonderfully aromatic herb known for its fresh, distinctive scent and longstanding place in traditional herbalism. Its leaves contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including menthol and menthone, although the amounts present in peppermint hydrosol are much lower and more variable than those found in peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint hydrosol is produced during steam distillation and captures a delicate, water-based expression of the plant's aroma. It brings a refreshing sensory character to Muscle Ease without requiring the addition of concentrated peppermint essential oil or menthol crystals.

I particularly enjoy the way peppermint complements lavender, providing a fresh herbal note that balances the softer floral aroma. Together, these hydrosols make the gel feel refreshing and pleasant to use, especially after a physically active day.

Flax-Derived Glycerin (Glycerin)
Glycerin is one of the most useful humectants in skincare, and it's an ingredient I return to frequently in my formulations. A humectant attracts and helps retain water, making glycerin particularly valuable in products intended to maintain skin hydration. It also contributes to the feel and spreadability of many water-based formulations.

I specifically choose flax-derived glycerin for my products. Although glycerin can be obtained from several different sources, I prefer flax as part of my thoughtful approach to ingredient sourcing.

In Muscle Ease, glycerin works alongside propanediol and aloe vera to help keep the skin feeling hydrated and comfortable. It contributes to the moisturizing qualities of the gel without requiring a heavy concentration of oils or butters.

Propanediol (1,3-Propanediol)
Propanediol is a versatile cosmetic ingredient that functions as both a humectant and a solvent. It helps attract moisture while also influencing how a formula spreads and feels during application. Its solvent properties can be particularly useful in complex water-based formulations containing botanical extracts.

In Muscle Ease, propanediol complements glycerin and aloe vera while contributing to the smooth, lightweight sensory experience of the gel. It also forms part of the formula's overall solvent environment, alongside water and the alcohol introduced through the herbal tinctures.

I chose propanediol because it offers several useful functions in one ingredient and helps support the elegant texture I wanted for this product.

Sepimax ZEN (Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6)
Sepimax ZEN is the ingredient responsible for much of Muscle Ease's beautifully smooth gel structure. It is a modern cosmetic polymer that thickens and stabilizes water-based formulations, creating a pleasant gel texture without requiring a traditional wax-based emulsion.

One of the reasons I chose Sepimax ZEN is its ability to work in formulations containing electrolytes and other ingredients that can be challenging for some conventional gelling agents. It can also help accommodate small amounts of oils within a gel system, making it especially useful for the type of formulation I wanted to create.

This allows me to combine herbal tinctures, hydrosols, and infused sunflower oil in a smooth, lightweight preparation. The result is a gel that spreads beautifully, provides comfortable glide during massage, and doesn't leave behind the heavy residue associated with some traditional herbal salves.

Sepimax ZEN is a wonderful example of how modern cosmetic formulation can complement traditional herbal preparations.

Dimethicone
Dimethicone is a silicone-based skin-conditioning ingredient that I chose specifically for the sensory qualities it brings to Muscle Ease. It creates a smooth, silky feel and helps reduce friction as the product is spread across the skin. Dimethicone also contributes emollience and can help reduce moisture loss from the skin's surface.

Although silicones sometimes receive an unfair reputation in skincare, dimethicone has a long history of cosmetic use and is valued for its stability, versatility, and pleasant skin feel. It is not the same as a heavy botanical oil, and its unique properties can be particularly useful in products designed for smooth application.

At 1%, dimethicone complements the infused sunflower oil without making the gel feel greasy. I chose it because I wanted Muscle Ease to offer a truly lovely massage experience, not simply a gel that disappears as soon as it's applied.

Liquid Germall Plus
Because Muscle Ease contains water, botanical hydrosols, aloe vera, and herbal extracts, proper preservation is an essential part of the formulation. Water-based cosmetic products can support the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold if they are not adequately preserved, even when they contain botanicals traditionally associated with antimicrobial activity.

Liquid Germall Plus is a broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative used to help protect formulations from microbial contamination during normal storage and use. Its inclusion is particularly important in a product containing multiple botanical preparations and intended for repeated application.

I believe that thoughtful preservation is just as important as choosing beautiful botanical ingredients. It helps protect the integrity of the finished product and is part of my commitment to making skincare that is not only enjoyable but responsibly formulated.

These descriptions reflect traditional herbal use and formulation principles rather than intended medical outcomes.
