A soothing botanical salve with a cooling touch

Menthol crystals and traditionally infused aromatic herbs come together in this invigorating chest and massage salve.

Our Cooling Menthol Salve combines the invigorating qualities of menthol with a carefully selected blend of herbs traditionally valued in topical preparations.

Organic olive oil is infused with peppermint, lavender, and dandelion leaf, creating a rich botanical foundation for this refreshing salve. Menthol crystals provide a pronounced cooling sensation, while a touch of basil essential oil adds its distinctive, uplifting herbal aroma.

This versatile salve can be gently massaged onto the chest and upper back as an aromatic chest rub or applied to the shoulders, neck, knees, and other areas where a cooling massage feels especially welcome.

Whether incorporated into an evening chest massage or used after a long day of physical activity, its refreshing sensation and familiar herbal aroma make it a wonderful addition to a traditional home care collection.

Why This Matters

I've always appreciated the simplicity and versatility of traditional herbal preparations, especially those that bring together whole herbs with a specific purpose.

Peppermint has long been valued for its refreshing, aromatic qualities, while lavender is a familiar favorite in traditional herbal skin care and massage oils. Dandelion leaf, although perhaps best known for its internal herbal uses, has a long history in herbalism and adds another dimension to this botanical infusion.

Menthol is a naturally occurring constituent of mint plants and is responsible for the characteristic cooling sensation we associate with peppermint. At 2%, it gives this salve a noticeable cooling effect, making it particularly enjoyable for targeted massage. Basil essential oil complements the formula with its fresh, distinctive aroma.

Rather than relying on fragrance alone, this formula combines traditionally infused herbs with the cooling properties of menthol to create a purposeful, aromatic salve.

Simple ingredients, thoughtfully chosen, with an appreciation for both traditional herbal knowledge and the unique qualities of the plants themselves.

Dandelion Leaf (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion is one of those wonderfully versatile plants that I have come to appreciate for so many reasons! I often use dandelion in oral herbal extracts, where it has traditionally been valued as a bitter tonic and diuretic, but it also has a history of use in topical herbal preparations. Dandelion contains a variety of naturally occurring plant compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other constituents that have attracted scientific interest. While it may not be the first herb that comes to mind when preparing an infused oil, I enjoy incorporating this familiar and often overlooked plant into traditional herbal formulations. Here, organic dandelion leaf is infused into olive oil alongside peppermint and lavender to create a thoughtfully balanced botanical foundation.

Menthol Crystals (Menthol)

Menthol is a naturally occurring organic compound found in mint plants, particularly peppermint and cornmint. Menthol crystals are typically obtained by cooling and crystallizing menthol-rich mint oil, then separating and purifying the crystals. One of menthol's most interesting properties is its ability to create a pronounced cooling sensation without actually lowering the temperature of the skin. It accomplishes this by activating cold-sensitive receptors, known as TRPM8 receptors, which send signals to the brain that we perceive as cooling. This is what gives menthol its unmistakable refreshing sensation when applied topically. At 2% of this formula, menthol provides the characteristic cooling experience that makes this salve particularly enjoyable for targeted massage.

Peppermint Leaf (Mentha × piperita)

Peppermint is one of my favorite herbs for its refreshing aroma and unmistakable cooling character. It has a long history of use in traditional herbalism and is particularly well known for its place in aromatic and digestive preparations. Peppermint naturally contains menthol and other volatile compounds that contribute to its distinctive fragrance and botanical properties. The leaves also contain flavonoids and phenolic compounds, including rosmarinic acid, which have been studied for their antioxidant activity. In this salve, organic peppermint leaf is infused into olive oil, complementing the cooling sensation of the menthol crystals while contributing its own aromatic herbal character.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender is a wonderfully versatile herb that has been used for centuries in traditional herbal and personal care preparations. Although it is perhaps best known for its calming fragrance, lavender has also long been valued in botanical oils, salves, and massage preparations. Its characteristic aroma comes largely from naturally occurring compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate, which are present in the plant's essential oil. Lavender also contains a variety of other botanical constituents, including phenolic compounds that have attracted scientific interest. I chose to include organic lavender in this infused oil because of its longstanding place in traditional topical herbal care and the way its soft, floral aroma complements the refreshing qualities of peppermint and menthol.

Basil Essential Oil (Ocimum basilicum)

Basil is an herb that many people are familiar with in the kitchen, but it also has a fascinating history in traditional herbalism! Its essential oil is highly aromatic and contains a variety of naturally occurring compounds, with the specific composition depending on the variety and chemotype of basil. Compounds such as linalool, eugenol, and other volatile constituents contribute to the distinctive fragrance profiles found among different types of basil. While basil essential oil may not be the first ingredient that comes to mind in a cooling salve, I find that a small amount complements the freshness of menthol and peppermint beautifully. It adds a bright, herbaceous note to the formula without overwhelming the softer botanical aromas of the infused herbs.

Olive Oil (Olea europaea)

Olive oil has been used for thousands of years in traditional herbal preparations and personal care. Rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic acid, it provides an emollient base that helps soften and condition the skin. It is also a wonderful carrier for traditional herbal infusions, allowing oil-soluble constituents from carefully selected plants to become part of the finished preparation. Rather than relying solely on concentrated extracts or essential oils, I appreciate the simplicity of slowly infusing whole herbs into a nourishing botanical oil. Organic olive oil provides the foundation for this salve, bringing together the peppermint, lavender, and dandelion leaf in one traditional herbal preparation.

These descriptions reflect traditional herbal use and formulation principles rather than intended medical outcomes.

How to Use
Apply a small amount to clean, intact skin and gently massage until evenly distributed. This aromatic salve is particularly enjoyable as a cooling chest rub or for targeted massage of the shoulders, upper back, neck, knees, and other areas where a refreshing sensation is desired.

Begin with a small amount to assess your skin's response. Wash hands thoroughly after application.

Who It's For

Additional Notes
Menthol creates a cooling sensation by interacting with cold-sensitive receptors in the skin. Although the sensation can be quite pronounced, menthol does not actually lower the skin's temperature.

This formula contains 2% menthol crystals, along with traditionally infused herbs and a touch of basil essential oil.

A little goes a long way!
